Bad River Outfitters
Welcome to Bad River Bucks & Birds:
Bad River Buck & Birds is located on the historic 100 year old Hermann Ranch. Established in 2001, we are one of South Dakotas newest hunting operations located in Draper,SD. Although the lodge may be new, head guides Brett Waibel and Chad Besemer have many years of experience hunting and guiding. Brett has been in commerical hunting since he was 15 years old and Chad has been in the hunting/guiding business for the past 12 years, he is also a professional gundog trainer. We are working hard to become one the best hunting outfitters in the state and our high return rate suggests we are doing something right! Come see for yourself and experience first rate hunting and western hospitality at its finest.

Bad River Lodge
The lodge at Bad River Buck & Birds is housed in what was previously the ranches horse barn. It has been completely redone to include a main floor dining room and 2nd floor great room for relaxation after the days hunt. Guests get a great nights sleep in the bunkhouse a short walk across the patio. The 10 double occupancy guest rooms are decorated with their own western theme, contain private bath and each room has its own temperature control for optimum guest comfort. Rooms contain either 2 queen size beds or 1 king size bed and 1 twin with pillowtop mattresses and full size pillows.

Our fully equipped lodge, comfortable rooms and accomating staff will quickly make Bad River Bucks & Birds your home away from home. As a matter of fact, the only complaint our guests have is that their stay isn't long enough!

Hunting Info

We offer a combination waterfowl/upland hunt. It is very difficult for a non-resident to get a duck license in South Dakato so our waterfowl is limited to Canada Geese. Waterfowl hunters head out to the field in early morning where we hunt out of pits and over decoys. When the morning is over we'll head back to the lodge for a great lunch and then spend the afternoon upland hunting. The best of both worlds!

We are very fortunate to offer our guests the benefits associated with hunting on a preserve. The preserve allows us to start our season Sept. 1 and hunt thru March 31st with hunting allowed from sunrise to sunset. Hunters can shoot more birds on the preserve than state regulations allow. The pheasant limit is 4/day but on the preserve you can shoot up to 15/day at a cost of $35/bird over the 4 bird limit. The preserve also offers the chance to hunt Grey Partridge and Quail.

Bad River offers 15,000 acres of sloughs, cattails, kosha, treelines and food plots for your pheasant hunt. In the early season hunters will often see flushes of 50 to 100 birds. Later in the season, when the weather turns colder and there is a couple of inches of snow on the ground , it is not uncommon to flush 300-500 birds out of heavy cover. We have had groups so amazed by the sheer number of birds they forget to
to pull the trigger! Our late season guests assure us the 20-30 minuters they spend in the cold is well worth the hunt of a lifetime. We also have Sharptail Grouse and are fortunate enough to be one of the few places in North America with large numbers of Prairie Chickens

We have large numbers of both Whitetail and Mule deer in our 80,000 acres of river bottoms, creek bottoms, food plots, shelter belts, and draws. Deer hunters have their choice of permanent stands, portable blinds and spot and stalk. We offer a limited number of deer hunts each year to improve our hunters chances of getting that trophey. Pheasant hunting is included with the deer hunt for those fortunate enought to fill their tag early.

We offer fully and semi guided Merriam turkey hunts. Hunters get a double tag which means you can shoot two Toms. Hunters also have the option of hunting with a bow or a gun. Most of our hunts are out of ground blinds, however, there may be a quick set up in brush or behind a tree. All of our turkey hunts are custominzed to the needs and experience of the hunter.

The Prairie Dog package is fast becoming one of our most popular hunts. We offer thousands of acres and over 50 different prairie dog towns for our guests. You are guaranteed not to see the same town twice except by request. Our hunters typically shoot around 250 to 500 rounds a day (sometimes more!). Praire Dog hunts start in May and run thru June 30th. You bring the gun, ammo and license and we'll provide one of the funniest hunts you've ever experienced.
